# Choose BOM inputs and factors

> Use the appropriate source for each material, energy, transport, waste, or leased-asset input.

Each BOM input describes an activity or material for **one batch**. Choose its scope or category before completing the fields. Use **Add input** to keep distinct activities on separate lines.

## Select an existing product

For a physical material or fuel, start typing **Product name** and select the matching existing product. Moya copies its details into this BOM; the copy can be edited independently. Select the actual product you use, rather than creating another name for the same material.

All BOM inputs remain separate from accounting. Physical materials, fuel, service, and purchased-energy inputs describe this recipe without changing inventory or activity records.

## Choose the input type

| Input | What to complete |
| - | - |
| **Scope 1** | Source type: stationary combustion, mobile combustion, fugitive emissions, or process emissions; source or process name; batch quantity and unit |
| **Scope 2** | Electricity, heating, or cooling; activity name; batch quantity and energy unit; applicable country, year, and factor choice |
| **Scope 3 · Category 1** | Material or service name, activity-based or spend-based method, database and factor, batch quantity and unit |
| **Scope 3 · Category 3** | Fuel, heating/cooling, or electricity; matching fuel/type or country; batch quantity and compatible unit |
| **Scope 3 · Category 4** | Freight mode, mass × distance or distance-only method, and shipment measurements for one batch |
| **Scope 3 · Category 5** | Waste type and treatment, batch quantity, and unit |
| **Scope 3 · Category 8** | Leased area and unit, price, currency and FX rate, and documented Scope 1 and Scope 2 factors and sources |

## Scope 1: direct emissions

Choose the combustion source or gas from the selector; search and filters narrow the choices. Mobile combustion supports fuel-based or vehicle-distance choices. Enter the quantity in the unit supported by that choice.

For process emissions, enter the process factor and its source. Use the quantity unit shown beside the factor.

Fuel combustion and fuel production describe different emissions. Use a **Scope 1** input for burning fuel and a **Category 3** input for the upstream emissions of supplying it when both apply to your batch.

## Scope 2: purchased electricity, heating, and cooling

For **Electricity**, enter the country and year and the energy quantity per batch. Moya fetches the annual location-based factor automatically. An optional market-based factor needs its source and must be expressed per the input unit.

The BOM's calculated electricity emissions currently use the **location-based factor**. The optional market-based information is retained with the input for review.

For **Heating** or **Cooling**, select the available heat/steam factor for the accounting year. The current cooling choice uses a **DESNZ heat/steam proxy**; review its suitability before using it as your cooling estimate.

These follow the same purchased-energy choices as [Scope 2](/user-guides/scope-two/electricity).

## Category 3: upstream fuel and energy

Select the fuel itself, rather than a combustion factor. Moya selects its upstream **well-to-tank (WTT)** factor using the accounting year. Heating/cooling also uses the available upstream choice. For electricity, select the country; the accounting year's annual upstream factor is selected automatically.

Use these for the emissions from supplying energy. The corresponding fuel combustion belongs in Scope 1, and purchased electricity or heat use belongs in Scope 2. [Fuel and energy purchases](/user-guides/purchases/fuel-and-energy) explains the distinction.

## Other Scope 3 inputs

For **Category 1**, choose a factor that describes the material or service. Activity-based methods use its physical quantity; spend-based methods use spending in the selected factor's currency basis.

For **Category 4**, enter freight measurements for one batch. **Mass × distance** calculates tonne.km; distance-only choices use the selected distance unit.

For **Category 5**, choose the waste material and treatment that match your disposal records.

For **Category 8**, enter leased area in m² or ft² and factors per that same area unit. Identify a source for each factor.

## Convert units when needed

Moya converts common compatible mass, volume, energy, and distance units automatically. Review the conversion shown in calculations.

For a custom relationship, enter **both sides**, for example **1 box = 0.003 tonnes**. The left amount describes your input unit and the right amount describes the factor unit. Do not guess a conversion between mass and volume; use the actual material's documented relationship.

## Check the calculation

Every input needs a valid quantity and the factor information required for its type. If a factor is unavailable, check the source choice, country, year, and unit. Complete the highlighted fields and read the explanation below them.

BOMs allocate production emissions to outputs. They do not create purchase invoices or replace your Scope 1, Scope 2, or Scope 3 reporting records. Use the ledger guides to record those activities, then use the BOM to describe the share associated with producing the outputs.
