# Set product downstream factors

> Set the profiles for processing, use, and end-of-life treatment of sold products.

Choose the factors for activities involving sold products on the **Downstream** step in **Product inventory**.

## Choose the applicable profiles

| Product sale category | Activities shown |
| - | - |
| **Intermediary** | **Category 10: Processing of sold products** |
| **Final** | **Category 11: Use of sold products** and **Category 12: End-of-life treatment** |

Edit a product used for **Sale** or **Both**, then go to **Downstream**. Select an existing factor for each activity, or create a factor using a documented source.

When creating a factor, complete its type, name, quantity unit or USD currency basis, value in kg CO₂e per unit, and source. For an activity-based factor with a different product unit, enter both amounts in the conversion fields. Use a conversion that represents the activity being measured, rather than assuming that a product count is interchangeable with mass or distance.

Save the product and expand its inventory row to review the selected factors. The activities shown depend on whether you chose **Intermediary** or **Final**.

## Opening stock is separate

The **Opening stock EF** describes stock held at the start of the year. The upstream product factor describes new purchases. Downstream factors describe activities such as processing, use, and disposal of sold products. Keep these selections separate even when a source document supports more than one of them.

## Factors on a sale

The optional factor selected directly in [Sales](/user-guides/sales/record-a-sale) is for that sale's Category 9 activity. Set factors for Category 10, 11, or 12 separately on the product's **Downstream** step.

If a factor is unavailable in the picker, check that you are in the intended workspace and accounting year. Choose or create the factor in the accounting year you are reporting.
